What We See Every Day
Common Flooring Problems in Clayton Homes
Why Do Hardwood Floors Cup in Clayton Homes?
Johnston County summers bring high ambient humidity that causes hardwood to absorb moisture and expand. When this happens unevenly, boards cup at the edges. Many homeowners first notice this as uneven boards underfoot or visible ridges along the edges of each plank. We see it frequently in older homes and in newer construction where the HVAC system was not running during installation. Cupping can often be corrected by sanding flat during a full refinishing cycle, provided the wear layer is sufficient.
Why Do Builder-Grade Hardwood Floors Wear Out So Fast?
Many Clayton homes built between 2005 and 2020 received thin-wear-layer engineered or low-grade prefinished hardwood. These floors often look scratched and dull well before their time. Most homeowners notice it in the high-traffic lanes first, the finish goes cloudy and bare wood starts showing through. We assess wear layer depth before recommending refinishing or replacement. Sometimes the correct answer is LVP over the existing subfloor rather than refinishing what cannot be saved.
How Do I Get Rid of the Orange Hardwood Floor Look?
A heavy amber-orange polyurethane was standard on red oak floors installed in the 1990s and early 2000s. It was the finish of its era. If your floors look dated, orange-tinted, or yellow against your current paint and cabinets, you are not imagining it, the finish has shifted color over time on top of already-warm red oak. This is fixable with a full sand, water popping, and a properly formulated stain. Moving away from orange oak is one of the most common transformation projects we do in Clayton.
Why Do Hardwood Floors Fail on Slab Foundations in Clayton?
Newer planned communities in Clayton, particularly those with slab-on-grade foundations, present moisture and flatness challenges that older crawl-space homes don't. Homeowners often notice early cupping, squeaking, or finish failure within the first few years, and the cause is almost always a moisture problem that wasn't caught before installation. We run dual moisture testing with a Tramex MEX5 pinless meter and a Delmhorst Total Check pin meter on every slab job, and apply a roll-on moisture barrier wherever readings require it.
Know Your Options
Should You Refinish or Replace Your Hardwood Floors in Clayton?
This is the most common question we get. The honest answer depends on three things: how much wear layer is left, whether the floor is structurally sound, and whether you want to keep the same species. Here is how the two options compare.
Cost per sq ft
Typical timeline
Best for
Disruption level
Warranty
Refinishing
$4.50 – $9.00
4 – 5 days
Structurally sound floors with wear layer remaining
Moderate, furniture moved, 24 hr re-entry
5-year warranty
Replacement
$15 – $25
1 – 2 weeks
Floors too thin to sand, wrong species, or structural damage
High, full demo, subfloor prep, installation
5-year warranty
Not sure which applies to your floors? Most floors that look bad are actually worth refinishing, the wear layer is deeper than it looks. We check it during the free in-home visit with a physical gauge and give you a straight answer before any commitment is made. If refinishing is not the right call, we will tell you that too.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing + Repair · Flowers Plantation
Cupped Red Oak Refinishing with Brazilian Cherry Border
The Problem
The floors had developed cupping across several rooms from moisture movement. Boards had lifted at the edges, creating a washboard surface. The finish was worn through in high-traffic areas. An added complexity: a Brazilian cherry inlaid border in the dining room required stain work that complemented both species.
The Solution
Full sand with the Lagler Hummel to eliminate cupping and bring all boards back to a flat plane. Board repairs completed before finish work. Water popping before stain opened the grain evenly. Dura Seal in Dusky Miller applied throughout, followed by Bona Traffic HD topcoat.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing · Austin Pond
Orange Red Oak Transformation with Inlay Medallion
The Problem
The floor had two problems. First: finish worn completely through in traffic lanes, grain channels blackened with dirt, and a heavy orange-amber cast from the original finish coating everything else. Second: an inlaid star medallion with alternating species required careful sanding to preserve the inlay geometry.
The Solution
Sanded the entire floor with the Lagler Hummel, removing the old finish and grain contamination down to clean bare wood. Water popping applied throughout before finish. Custom hardwax oil blend transformed the orange-amber floor into a rich dark tone that brought the inlay medallion to life.

LVP Installation · Winston Plantation
Full-Home LVP with Complete Subfloor Demo
The Problem
The home had four different floor surfaces that all had to come out before a single new plank could go down: carpet in the living areas, vinyl over luan in the kitchen, existing hardwood in the foyer and dining room, and carpet on the stairs. Getting every surface to a clean, flat subfloor was the job before the real job.
The Solution
Full demo of all existing surfaces down to the subfloor, followed by roll-on moisture barrier across the entire main level. Innova SPC in Pearl River installed throughout, running continuous through kitchen, dining, and living areas. Custom stair treads installed to match.

Hardwood Floor Installation · Glen Laurel
Red Oak Lace-In with Herringbone Hearth, Natural Hardwax Oil
The Problem
The family room had wall-to-wall carpet over a concrete subfloor while the rest of the main level had existing 2.25-inch red oak. The homeowners wanted a seamless lace-in through every doorway so the floor read as one continuous surface, plus a custom herringbone inlay framing the fireplace hearth.
The Solution
Carpet removed, moisture barrier applied to the concrete subfloor, then new 2.25-inch red oak installed and laced into the existing floor at every transition. The herringbone field was laid at the hearth and transitioned cleanly into the straight-run boards. Full sand across the entire main level, water-popped stain preparation, then natural Natura OneCoat hardwax oil for a warm matte finish.

Yes. Most refinishing projects in Clayton take 4 to 5 days from start to finish: two days to sand, half a day to stain (if applicable), and two days for finish coats and curing. We will give you a specific timeline during the free in-home assessment.
We use three stages of HEPA dust containment on every refinishing job. The Bona PowerDrive planetary sander produces significantly less airborne dust than a drum sander. Our dust extraction system captures fine particles at the source before they become airborne. Most homeowners report far less dust than they expected. We also use waterborne finishes with low VOC content, so odor is minimal and re-entry times are much shorter than with oil-based systems.

Yes, matching is one of our specialties. We assess species, width, grain character, and finish tone before recommending an approach. On site-finished floors, we sand and refinish both old and new together so the final result is uniform across the entire surface. We carry multiple species widths and can source material that closely matches what you have. Bring a floor sample to our showroom and we will walk through your options.
Yes. We provide a five-year warranty on our work. The industry standard is one year. Our warranty is a reflection of our confidence in the materials and methods we use on every job.
White oak is the most requested species in Clayton right now. Red oak remains popular in older homes throughout Johnston County. We also install hickory, maple, walnut, and Brazilian cherry. White oak requires specific expertise in sanding and staining and rewards experience. It is one of our specialties.
Refinishing means sanding the floor down to bare wood and applying a full finish system from scratch. It corrects deep scratches, stain changes, cupping, and worn-through finish. Recoating means lightly abrading the existing finish and applying a new topcoat over it without sanding to bare wood. Recoating is faster (one day) and less expensive, but it only works if the existing finish is still adhered and in reasonable condition. We assess which option is right for your floor during the free in-home visit.
