Hardwood Floor Recoating
Also known as a screen and recoat or buff and coat, hardwood floor recoating restores protection and sheen without full sanding. If the wood is solid but the finish is worn, a professional recoat is all it takes. Most jobs completed in six hours, starting at $2.00 per square foot.
The Smart Alternative
What Is a Screen and Recoat?
A screen and recoat, also called a buff and coat or hardwood floor recoating, is the process of applying a fresh layer of finish over your existing floor without sanding down to bare wood. We lightly abrade the current finish to create adhesion, then apply a new coat of Bona Traffic HD, the most durable water-based finish available on the market today.
Recoating is the right call when your floors have surface-level wear, a dull appearance, or light scratches that have not broken through to the wood itself. It is the most cost-effective way to extend the life of your hardwood and restore a uniform sheen throughout the home.
As a member of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) since 2002, we follow the industry's highest standards on every recoating job, including proper floor assessment, adhesion testing, and finish selection.
Fast turnaround.
Most screen and recoat jobs are completed within six hours. Your floors are ready for light foot traffic within 24 hours, far less disruption than a full refinish.
Significant cost savings.
Recoating starts at $2.00 per square foot, a fraction of the cost of full refinishing. No sanding to bare wood and no stain application means less time and less labor.
Bona Traffic HD finish.
We use Bona Traffic HD exclusively, the hardest water-based finish on the market. Your refreshed floor will hold up to daily life far longer than a standard buff and coat product.
Even sheen, wall to wall.
High-traffic areas lose their sheen while the rest of the floor stays consistent. A screen and recoat restores an even, uniform finish across the entire surface.
Homeowner Terminology
What Is a Buff and Coat for Hardwood Floors?
A buff and coat, also called a screen and recoat, is a hardwood floor maintenance process that lightly abrades the existing finish and applies a fresh protective topcoat. Unlike full hardwood floor refinishing, recoating does not sand the floor down to bare wood or change the stain color. It is designed for hardwood floors with surface-level wear where the wood itself is still in good condition.
Most buff and coat projects are completed in a single day with far less disruption than full sanding and refinishing. We get calls from homeowners in Raleigh, Clayton, Garner, and across the Triangle who have heard different terms from different contractors. Buff and coat, screen and recoat, and hardwood floor recoating all refer to the same service. The terminology varies by region and contractor, but the process is identical.
If your floors have deep scratches, water stains, or finish delamination, a buff and coat will not fully address those issues. That is when full hardwood floor refinishing or board-level repair is the right next step. We assess your floors in person and tell you which service applies before any work is scheduled.
Before You Book
Is Your Floor a Good Candidate for a Screen and Recoat?
A hardwood floor recoating service works best when the existing finish is worn but the wood itself is still in good condition. Here is how to know which side of that line your floor is on.
Good Candidates for Recoating
- ✓
Dull or lightly scratched hardwood floors
- ✓
Surface-level finish wear in traffic lanes
- ✓
Loss of sheen without exposed bare wood
- ✓
Floors with intact stain you want to keep
- ✓
Floors last refinished 3 to 8 years ago
- ✓
No wax, polish, or oil products applied
May Need Full Refinishing Instead
- –
Deep scratches that cut through to bare wood
- –
Gray or black water stains in the wood
- –
Peeling, bubbling, or delaminating finish
- –
Pet urine damage that has penetrated the wood
- –
Wax, polish, or oil products applied to the surface
- –
Wanting a different stain color
If your floor needs more than a recoat, the next step is a full hardwood floor refinishing. We will tell you which one is right before you spend money on either service.
Not sure which service you need?
During a free in-home assessment we test the existing finish, check for wax or polish contamination, and tell you whether recoating or full refinishing makes sense for your floors before you commit to anything.
How We Work
Our Screen and Recoat Process
Floor Assessment
We evaluate your floors in person, check the finish condition, test for wax or polish contamination, measure scratch depth, and confirm that recoating is the right option for your specific situation.
Prep and Masking
We move furniture if needed and hang plastic where needed to seal off doorways and adjacent spaces. Vents stay open to keep conditioned air circulating. We run air scrubbers with external filters on your air returns to keep the rest of your home clean throughout the process.
Screening
We lightly abrade the existing finish using a buffer and screen pad, creating the mechanical adhesion the new topcoat needs to bond properly. This step does not remove stain or damage the wood.
Tack and Clean
We thoroughly tack and clean the floor to remove all dust and debris from the screening process before any finish is applied.
Bona Traffic HD Application
We apply one to two coats of Bona Traffic HD using a T-bar applicator for a consistent, even result across the entire surface.
Final Inspection
We inspect the finished floor under good lighting and walk you through the result before we leave.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Hardwood floor recoating, also called a screen and recoat or buff and coat, is the process of applying a fresh layer of finish over your existing floor without sanding down to bare wood. We lightly abrade the current finish to create adhesion, then apply a new coat of Bona Traffic HD. It is ideal for floors where the wood is in good shape but the finish is dull, worn, or lightly scratched.
A buff and coat is another term for hardwood floor recoating or screen and recoat. The process is the same: we lightly buff (abrade) the existing finish surface to create adhesion, then apply a fresh topcoat. No sanding to bare wood, no stain change. The terms buff and coat, screen and recoat, and recoating all refer to this same service.
Yes. Buff and coat, screen and recoat, and hardwood floor recoating all describe the same process: lightly abrading the existing finish and applying a new topcoat without sanding to bare wood. Different contractors and regions use different terminology for the same service.
Refinishing involves sanding the floor down to bare wood and applying new stain and finish, a full restoration. Recoating (screen and recoat) adds a new topcoat without sanding to bare wood. Recoating is faster and less expensive, but it cannot change the stain color or address damage that has penetrated the wood itself.
No. Recoating works when the existing finish is worn but the wood itself is still in good condition. Floors with deep scratches into the wood, black or gray water stains, peeling or delaminating finish, wax or polish contamination, or pet urine damage typically need full refinishing rather than recoating. Floors treated with consumer wax or oil products cannot bond to a new water-based topcoat without extensive prep. We assess this during the free in-home visit.
Hardwood floor recoating (screen and recoat) in Raleigh and the Triangle starts at $2.00 per square foot, a fraction of the cost of full refinishing. Floors with wax or polish contamination require additional prep and are priced at assessment. We provide written estimates with no hidden fees.
Recoating starts at $2.00 per square foot, a fraction of the cost of a full refinish, because there is no sanding to bare wood and no stain application involved. We provide written estimates after a free assessment.
A screen and recoat with Bona Traffic HD typically extends the life of your floor by 3 to 5 years before the next recoat is needed, depending on traffic, pets, and maintenance habits. Regular recoating every 3 to 5 years significantly extends the overall life of the floor and reduces how often a full refinish is required.
Most screen and recoat jobs are completed within six hours. Your floors are ready for light foot traffic within 24 hours and back to full use within 3 days with Bona Traffic HD.

Yes. Engineered hardwood floors can be recoated using the same screen and recoat process as solid hardwood, as long as the existing finish is worn but still intact and the wood surface is not damaged. Recoating engineered hardwood is actually a preferred maintenance strategy because engineered boards have a limited wear layer that cannot be sanded as many times as solid wood. A buff and coat preserves that wear layer while restoring the finish.
Hardwood floors can be recoated multiple times over their lifetime. Most floors are candidates for a screen and recoat every 3 to 5 years depending on traffic. The limit on recoating is typically finish buildup or the condition of the underlying wood, not a fixed number. We assess adhesion and finish condition each time to confirm recoating is still the right service rather than a full refinish.
A screen and recoat covers surface-level scratches that are limited to the finish layer and restores a uniform sheen across the floor. Scratches that have cut through the finish into the bare wood will still be visible after recoating because the process does not sand the wood surface. Deep scratches, gouges, and damage that has reached the wood require full refinishing or board-level repair to fully address.
Floors treated with wax, consumer oil products, or wax-based polishes cannot bond to a new water-based topcoat without extensive stripping prep. Floors with peeling or delaminating finish, deep scratches into bare wood, gray or black water stains, or active pet urine damage are not candidates for recoating and need full refinishing or repair instead. We test for contamination and confirm finish adhesion during the free in-home assessment before recommending any service.
